About the Department
As one of the two organized research centers in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Center for Family and Community Engagement (CFACE) was established to promote safe, healthy, and productive families and communities. The center builds these partnerships by supporting community engagement, offering training and technical assistance, and providing evaluation and research. The center works with interdisciplinary partners on both research and practice at the local, national, and global levels to improve family and community health and well-being. CFACE enjoys strong college and university support, as well as a reputation for excellence among its community partners.
The center’s work is consistent with NC State’s land-grant research-intensive mission, including community-engaged scholarship and collaboration with public agencies, community organizations, and other partners and stakeholders at the local, regional, national, and global scales. It is also consistent with and supports the new college strategic plan, which has established three goals: being the nation’s most innovative humanities and social sciences college; designing and building for collaboration to help solve critical challenges; and taking groundbreaking and effective action to promote equity, diversity and inclusion.

Essential Job Duties
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks an outstanding individual with a strong commitment to academic and research excellence commensurate with the expectations of a major research university, a proven record of effective leadership, and a visionary approach to administration. The director will lead efforts to promote research and engagement in the broad fields of family and community services and engagement. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Engagement in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the director, serving as the center’s leader and administrative officer, will be called upon to provide strategic leadership and vision in:
- creating an environment that facilitates an effective shared vision; serving as a thought leader and ambassador for the center, college, and university;
- leading research and engagement activities in the context of a broad vision of the Center’s mission;
- identifying sources of external support for the Center’s research and engagement mission, and successfully obtaining such funding through grants, contracts, gifts, and other appropriate funding mechanisms.
- facilitating an inclusive, equitable, and culturally competent environment with a strong commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse staff;
- promoting and rewarding excellence in research, mentoring, center, college, and university service, and community engagement;
- fostering a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration within the college, including building partnerships and alliances across the university;
- linking programs within the center to the broader college and university missions, including developing external partnerships, when relevant, in support of the center’s mission and goals; aligning and allocating resources with the center’s, college’s, and university’s strategic plans and vision;
- demonstrating scholarly and professional engagement & excellence
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- performance evaluations for all direct reports, including annual reviews and recommendations for staff retention and promotion;
- recruitment and hiring of new staff;
- recommendations for salaries for staff hires, including new hires, discretionary increases, and retentions; in a fair, equitable, principled, and defensible manner;
- allocation of available space to meet center needs
- comprehensive planning of all funding sources in the center using all available funding sources to meet the needs of the center and allowing it to achieve its mission and goals;
- management and administration of fiscal resources, including planning, expenditure of funds in accordance with relevant processes and rules, and execution of fiscal year close out in accordance with college standards
- assisting, when appropriate, the college’s development staff in fundraising;
- serving, where appropriate, as the principal investigator for grants and contracts;
- external relations with alumni and the community;
- representing the center in college and university-level planning and strategy development.

Minimum Education and Experience
- An earned doctorate in a discipline in which a tenured position may be offered in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and experience commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Professor in a department in the college.
Other Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including leadership of a diverse staff
- Outstanding communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Managerial skills, including supervising and managing people, creating and implementing budgets, and managing grants and contracts
- A background in work supporting strong communities and families
- The ability to develop, articulate, and implement a strategic plan for the center
