About the Department
Founded in 2003, the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique collaboration between the the top-ranked College of Engineering at North Carolina State University (NC State), the excellent clinical and translational environment of the nationally ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine, and the strong academic and research core of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences. The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a supportive and collaborative environment, and we welcome candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. The new faculty member will have already developed or will be expected to establish a successful interdisciplinary research program, and actively participate in graduate and undergraduate teaching programs. The specific teaching requirements will be tailored to the expertise of the individual and the needs of the department. The selected candidate will have a primary appointment at NC State, with tenure home in the College of Engineering.
Essential Job Duties
This position will have the opportunity to complement, and collaborate with, other members of the Center for Translational Predictive Biology, the existing faculty in the college, and participate in the University-wide Comparative Medicine Institute (
CMI).
The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to interact with clinical faculty in a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital and outstanding research faculty affiliated with the College of Veterinary Medicine and relevant existing faculty clusters working in related areas such as Modeling the Living Embryo (
MLE), High-dimensional Integration of Biological Systems (
HIBS) and Synthetic and Systems Biology (
SSB) cluster.
Extensive resources and opportunities for collaboration at UNC-Chapel Hill include the NIH-supported NC Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC.

Minimum Education and Experience
PhD or equivalent degree in Biomedical Engineering or other related field
Other Required Qualifications
Candidates should have a track record of collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and experience in developing platforms for complex 3D cell culture systems, including bioreactors, biofabrication, microfluidics, sensors and actuators, and high-quality data acquisition, including novel imaging and analytical techniques, computer vision, and/or real-time microsystem controls.
Preferred Qualifications
Interest or experience with working with multiple animal models (e.g., rodents, pigs, humans) and/or use of organ-on-chip as models of healthy and diseased states.
