Position Highlights

The Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics Department (CAEM) is seeking a qualified and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate I. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will perform research on (a) designing smart materials, mainly but not limited to, Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and composites to (a) perform as thermal diodes at high temperatures, (b) perform as acoustic vibration dampers at high temperatures, and potentially perform concurrently as thermal diodes and as acoustic vibration dampers. The position requires a strong background in simulation of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and of monolithic materials and composites at a multiplicity of scales, from atomic to macro in both time and space.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and/or other smart materials and composites using simulations at multiple spatial and temporal scales to perform as thermal diodes and/or as acoustic vibration dampers.
  • Work is expected to be team based, i.e., work with a team working on a relevant project.
  • Present the results to sponsors and/or conferences/workshops and prepare manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed journals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Mechanics of Materials or Materials Engineering, or relevant field upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in simulation of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and of monolithic materials and composites at a multiplicity of scales, from atomic to macro in both time and space.
  • Experience of thermodynamics.
  • Simulation of materials and processes at spatiotemporal scales ranging from atomic to macro.
  • Atomistic simulations, phase field simulations and finite element and/or finite difference methods.
  • Experience working with high performance computers and parallel processing.
