This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.  While there may be a current opportunity for remote work, the successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office no later than 60 days from written notice provided by the university. Applicants must be legally eligible for unrestricted employment to work in the U.S. No work visas will be sponsored for this position.

The Post Doctoral Fellow will work on AAOKH’s long-term database infrastructure in collaboration with researchers and organizations that are part of the Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic network, with funding from the National Science Foundation. The Post Doctoral Fellow will explore several related themes of Arctic environmental change, Indigenous data sovereignty, and community-guided research, focusing on:

a)       Co-production of database re-design to make community-based observations more useful to and useable by partnering communities as well as interdisciplinary researchers,

b)      Engaging with partnering communities to align community-based observations with FAIR and CARE Principles for Indigenous data governance and sovereignty ,

c)       Developing use cases for community-based observations and monitoring to address actionable science relevant to Indigenous people or research priorities identified through community partnerships.

This position is based at the International Arctic Research Center at UAF and will be mentored by Dr. Donna Hauser. The initial appointment will be for 1 year, with the potential for reappointment pending performance review and funding availability. The position will remain open until filled, but applications should be submitted by June 8, 2021 to ensure full consideration.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:  

Knowledge and ability to engage in community-based or community-driven research and/or meaningful engagement with Indigenous organizations.

Knowledge and ability to work with and synthesize diverse social, ecological, and qualitative data.

Knowledge of database management and organization, preferably in programming languages such as Ruby or Python.

Ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and ability to conduct multidisciplinary research.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences and partners.

Familiarity working, living, or conducting research in rural Alaska and/or other Arctic regions, preferred.

Required Education and Experience:  

PhD (already received, or having completed all requirements and waiting graduation) in a relevant discipline and 2 years of research related to the relevant scientific field.
