Position Highlights The Department of Planetary Sciences/Lunar & Planetary Laboratory of the University of Arizona has an opening for Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Planetary Volcanology. This is a year-to-year appointment contingent upon funding and performance

Duties & Responsibilities
  • The successful applicant will work on activities related to Planetary Volcanism.
  • The priority activity will lead to the creation of a database detailing the characteristics of erupted products on the Moon to link erupted volumes and volatile release. This activity will combine literature-based search with Monte Carlo modeling and statistics.
  • Additional activities, depending on the applicant’s preferences, will relate related to terrestrial analogs to silicate volcanism on the Moon and Mars, as well as remote sensing investigations of volcanic terrains on Mars using ArcGIS-based analysis and modeling lava emplacement dynamics using Comsol Multiphysics.
  • Opportunities related to cryomagmas and cryovolcanism may be available in Year 2 and beyond.
  • The applicant will be expected to assist in the day-to-day supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate students using or studying in the lab.
  • Other duties may be added as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced skills in Statistics and programming
  • Expertise in ArcGIS
  • Expertise in Finite Element Modeling (FEM), preferably Comsol Multiphysics
  • Expertise in machine learning and computer vision, including Matlab and OpenCV
  • Expertise in photogrammetry, lidar, a3D visualization and data analysis
  • Independently motivated. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in Science, Geology, Planetary Science or a related field, received by the start date of the position
  • Experience in Statistics
  • Experience in Matlab, Python, or similar programming skill language
  • Experience in the geochemistry of magmas, ingenious rocks, and volatiles
