What You Will Do

The P-4 Thermonuclear Plasma Physics Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position in experimental high-energy-density physics for our Multi-shell implosion hydrodynamics team. The experiments seek to understand the physics associated with compression and thermonuclear burn of deuterium-tritium by layered, dense shells. The successful candidate will perform cutting-edge experiments at world’s leading high-energy-density facilities, collaborate with teams of scientists from different groups and divisions, and expand our understanding of these complex physical systems. Your research achievements will be communicated through publication in high-impact journals and conference presentations nationally and internationally.

The P-4 Thermonuclear Plasma Physics group conducts a broad range of research, including hydrodynamics, radiation transport, opacity and equations of state, radiation hydrodynamics, inertial confinement fusion, magneto-inertial fusion, and magnetized fusion energy. We perform experiments on large- and small-scale experimental facilities, including the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the OMEGA laser facility at the University of Rochester, the Linac Coherent Light Source (SLAC), the Advanced Photon Source (Argonne National Laboratory), Wendelstein-7X, and other facilities locally and around the world.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Research experience in a laboratory environment

  • Ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in experimental physics or a very closely related discipline, as evidenced by at least one first-author paper submitted to or published in a peer-reviewed journal.

  • Ability to communicate both technically and interpersonally both orally and in writing. Examples include but are not limited to journal presentations, technical reports, oral or poster conference presentations, public speaking, and classes taught.

Education/Experience : A Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field, completed within the last five years.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Academic training in plasma physics, fluid mechanics, nuclear physics, or a related field.

  • Familiarity with approaches and challenges of High Energy Density Physics (HED) and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF)

  • Familiarity with plasma diagnostics, such as imaging, spectroscopy, interferometry, or nuclear measurements.

  • Experience using laser or pulsed-power driver facilities to conduct ICF or HED experiments.

  • Experience with data analysis using software tools such as IDL, Python or MATLAB.

  • The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
