CVM Human Resources is a centralized college department that supports all college HR functions and coordinates university consistent programs and processes that are aimed at improving the college’s community and culture. The CVM HR department is a highly dedicated team of HR professionals supporting a community of over 1,500 faculty, staff, house officers, post docs, graduate and student workers, temporary employees, visitors, and adjunct faculty in the full employment cycle and aligns the HR function to the strategy and goals of the college and ultimately the university.

Essential Job Duties
The HR Specialist will provide comprehensive HR support and consultative services to faculty, staff, and administration at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). In this role you will assess situations quickly, offer well-informed advice, and collaborate effectively with college managers and university offices. Additionally, you will provide ongoing assistance to HR initiatives and act as a backup for CVM HR Leadership.
Responsibilities span five key areas of Human Resources. The following is a summary and not an exhaustive list:
Recruitment & Hiring Support:
- Assist department leadership with position design, classification, and compensation.
- Collaborate with hiring managers and search committees to identify hiring needs and recruitment strategies.
- Draft and post job announcements, write external job advertisements, and pre screen candidates.
Classification & Compensation:
- Analyze and evaluate position descriptions, providing recommendations on grade level and FLSA status.
- Consult with managers on classification strategies and prepare documentation on findings.
- Communicate classification and compensation results to stakeholders.
HR Documentation & Systems:
- Prepare offer letters and enter new hire information into the HRIM system.
- Work with the CVM Business Office to ensure proper funding sources are used.
- Assist with academic appointments, promotions, tenure processes and system updates.
Training & Compliance:
- Provide training to hiring managers and search committees on recruitment processes and responsibilities.
- Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Recommend process improvements to enhance HR efficiency.
Employee Relations & Performance:
- Offer guidance on employee relations, collaborating with CVM HR Leadership.
- Manage the annual review process and provide support to managers on content development.
- Evaluate and resolve workplace issues, coaching managers and employees to enhance performance.

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to work effectively with administration, faculty and staff at all levels.
- Previous experience in a generalist HR role that may include international employment, residency coordination, employee relations, consulting, a basic knowledge of recruitment, and/or organizational development.
- Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
- Ability to partner with hiring managers to successfully fill open positions with the best qualified candidate.
- Strong attention to detail, able to assess and meet the needs of customers, and strong problem solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize and meet multiple objectives and deadlines in a fast paced environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication and customer service skills.
- Effective team member on collaborative projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduation from a four year college or university is strongly preferred.
- Prefer experience working in Higher Education HR generalist role and/or developing successful recruiting strategies for Faculty and Professional positions.
- HR certification (HRCI and/or SHRM) strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in consulting, coaching, and influencing managers on workforce management and HR programs.
- Experience with position management including funding tracking.
