Essential Job Duties
The Biological Sciences department is recruiting for a cell and molecular biology Research Scholar. The purpose of the Research Scholar position is to oversee a range of complex projects on comparative immunogenetics using new and established ’omics databases, and on immunotoxicology using zebrafish and cell culture. The person in this position will perform a variety of complex and independent activities involving experimental design, and data collection, analysis, and documentation, and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the lab.
- Employing molecular biology techniques (e.g., RT-PCR, plasmid design and construction) and cell culture techniques (e.g., sterile technique, transfections).
- Managing zebrafish husbandry and cell culture facilities.
- Recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising undergraduate research assistants engaged in data collection, management, and analysis.
- Coordinating biological specimen storage.
- Managing purchasing, equipment maintenance, and lab safety compliance, documentation, and inspections (e.g., EHS, IACUC, IRB).
- Identifying and understanding potential obstacles, making alternative plans, and/or modifying existing procedures.
- Serving as a resource on technical and program-related issues for staff and others.
- Providing information to assist with planning and monitoring of expenditures to meet organizational objectives and compliance.
- Assisting with the preparation of budget documents and reports.
- Monitoring expenditures and identifying potential budget issues.
- Contributing to recommendations for needed expenditures and revisions to project budgets.
- Demonstrating the ability and willingness to work with various groups of people.
- Performing some weekend and evening work as required.
- Completing other duties as assigned.
- Fostering an environment that is supportive and welcoming of all groups.

- Assist in the development of research projects and hypotheses
- Analyze, interpret and evaluate data
- Process images and compile figures and text for publication and grant submissions;
- Facilitate collaboration across disciplines (e.g., with toxicologists, bioinformaticians, and biochemists)
- Disseminate results by presenting at conferences
Minimum Education and Experience
Ph.D. in genetics/genomics, immunology, or toxicology (or relevant terminal degree); or relevant Master’s degree with at least 5 years of postdegree professional workexperience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Must have excellent communication (oral and written) and strong organizational skills
- Background and training in molecular biology, immunology and/or toxicology
- Knowledge of day-to-day management needs of a research lab
- Experience using zebrafish (or other aquatic species) and/or experience using mammalain cell culture
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in genetics/genomics, immunology, or toxicology
- Research experience using zebrafish and mammalian cell culture
- Experience with lab safety protocols and paperwork
- Experience in managing teams of 2-4 student researchers
- Established record of high-quality scientific publications
