Required Qualifications:
1. Advanced degree with 1 or more years of research training in Soil Science, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related field.
2. Experience designing and conducting computer modeling and simulation of soil hydrologic processes.
3. Knowledge or experience with soils and agricultural practices in the Northern Great Plains region of the US including agricultural subsurface drainage.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience working with drainage simulation software such as DRAINMOD
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills
3. Ability to engage with external stakeholder groups to communicate research findings
4. Project management experience

Position and/or Unit Overview:
This is a 100% time position as a research assistant working in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate at the Northwest Research & Outreach Center (NWROC) located in Crookston, MN.

Major Areas of Accountability (with percentages):
1) 40% Conduct research investigations on nutrient and water management in subsurface-drained and undrained agricultural system. This includes the collection, analysis, and interpretation of
field-collected soil and water quality data.
2) 20% Apply advanced techniques to evaluate the interactions between site-specific factors (e.g., soil texture, field drainage), environmental factors (e.g., soil temperature, soil moisture), and
nitrogen mineralization across the network of samples collected through each growing season.
3) 20% Design and conduct computer simulations and modeling related to soil hydraulics as influenced by subsurface drainage systems. This includes, but is not limited to, simulation and
modeling of infiltration, drainable porosity, and water table depth.
4) 15% Write and prepare manuscripts for publication and/or project reports for submission to granting agencies.
5) 10% Mentor and provide research guidance to student employees, graduate students, colleagues, and/or co-workers. Discuss and plan new avenues of investigation. Assist in drafting proposals to procure research funding.

The Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWOC) is located adjacent to the University of Minnesota Crookston campus. The NWROC is part of the University of MN College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS), which owns about 1,500 acres of land. The center provides analytical, biological, and field laboratories to U of M faculty, staff, and students to conduct research and demonstrations that will enhance the efficient use of agriculture and natural resources in northwest Minnesota.
