Essential Job Duties

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at NC State University is seeking a 2.5-year postdoctoral research associate to assess changes in manure management systems on broiler, swine, and dairy farms across the US and identify how these impact GHG emissions. This is a collaboration with the USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) and will involve collaborations with ERS project leaders and state manure management experts. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to develop and expand the GHG program in the Animal Waste Management Lab and work with national datasets to determine manure management practices on broiler, swine, and dairy operations in the US. The successful candidate needs to demonstrate strong expertise in identification of GHG emission sources and measurement of GHG emissions. This includes an understanding of common manure management practices, experience with field instrumentation, and management of large datasets. In addition, experience with GHG analytical equipment, fundamental knowledge of nitrogen and carbon cycling, and experience with field-based research is required.

Major Responsibilities include:
  1. Identify regional changes in manure management practices in the US broiler, swine, and dairy industries using historical national ERS Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) data;
  2. Assist in updating future ARMS questionnaires to better identify and quantify GHG emission sources within broiler, swine, and dairy waste management systems in the US;
  3. Assist with novel research at the three NC State Research Dairies, identifying GHG emission sources and quantifying differences between diverse dairy systems (pasture, conventional, and conventional with creamery).
