POSITION TITLE: Senior Director, Prospect Research & Donor Strategy

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Director of Prospect Research and Donor Strategy leads the Prospect Management and Research (PMR) team, professionals responsible for prospect research, prospect management, strategic planning, and market research. This individual leads in the development and implementation of prospect management practices to maximize fundraising for Scripps Research. Will provide information, analysis, and management tools to support effective fundraising programs for the Institute. Works regularly and collaboratively with various staff members of the Office of Philanthropy to develop and socialize policies and procedures that ensure the proper operation of the prospect pipeline and portfolio optimization.

Oversees the team's responsibilities for managing prospect data within the Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT database, including data entry, data hygiene efforts, analysis, and reporting. Contributes to the tracking and expansion of the prospect pipeline through analysis of interactions, ratings, and other prospect data. Provides strategic and collaborative advice for fundraising managers including tracking fundraiser metrics and supporting fundraiser success. Upholds the Institute's policies and procedures on prospect management, and confidently represents the Development Services team as integrated support to the Philanthropy staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Prospect Management Programming:

  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and consistently improve a prospect management program designed to optimize development officer portfolios, align to Scripps Research fundraising priorities, and ensure excellent data quality and consistency.
  • Organize top prospect review meetings, the portfolio review process, and development officer moves management/strategy meetings. These activities are designed to ensure shared focus on prospect and proposal strategies, provide projections for fundraising outcomes, offer clarity and understanding of development officer goals and objectives, and ensure timely tracking of necessary follow up.
  • Oversee the recommendation of prospects for outreach and portfolio assignments, continuously monitor the unassigned prospect and donor pools to ensure a robust pipeline of new prospects.
  • Continually review targeted portfolio issues and ratify improvements to the prospect management parameters and procedures.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in prospect and proposal management when called upon for data governance or related issues.

Reporting and Tracking

  • Partner with the Manager of Data & Analytics to create, maintain, and execute a suite of audits and other reporting functions, to promote accurate data-driven prospect management practices and ensure transparency, quality, and productivity.
  • In partnership with development services & operations team, ensure data record accuracy, support gift agreement processes and policies along with proposal hygiene to promote department compliance.
  • Manage a suite of Quality Assurance (QA) reports in Raiser's Edge NXT to alert to data hygiene issues and divergence from business processes. Develop and communication processes to resolve these issues in a timely manner.

Leadership

  • Management responsibility for one prospect management analyst, including hiring, mentoring, goal setting, continuous feedback and performance evaluation.
  • Set strategic goals for the department and work with the PMR team toward achievement of strategic objectives.
  • Oversee reporting on prospect management and research activity for internal prospect management and research metrics.
  • Support fundraising management in the development and tracking of metrics for their teams. Support managers in strategies to achieve success.
  • Develop and implement 'best practices' in prospect management for Scripps Research by staying abreast of current and emerging trends in philanthropy, fundraising, higher education and business intelligence.
  • Develop and modify departmental processes and policies for the benefit of the PMR team and the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned by Development Services leadership.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10+ years of progressively more in-depth experience in prospect research, development, fundraising, market research and /or relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong sense of curiosity.
  • Advanced database, data hygiene and researching skills.
  • Ability to deal with confidential matters with tact and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks as needed, meet short deadlines, and complete projects within specified timeframes amidst a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication; demonstrated ability to listen, observe and respond to a needs assessment in a positive fashion.
  • Demonstrate the ability to practice and adhere to organizational values, monitor and apply policies, guidelines, and defined set of rules.
  • Proficiency with Windows environment and standard MS Office suite: Outlook, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word, and complex databases, etc. required.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work well with and through others required.
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT.
  • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

COMPENSATON:

The expected hiring range for this position is $130,000 to $150,000/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
