Job Description |
We seek a postdoctoral scholar with a background in quantitative ecology who will work on multiple acoustic telemetry projects being conducted in the territorial waters of the US Virgin Islands on marine animals, including but not limited to fish, sea turtles and macro-invertebrates. Integration with the University of the Virgin Islands’ (UVI) Ridge to Reef Project will include collecting, managing and using information from the UVI’s long-term data sets, including water quality and other environmental conditions. Ideally the post-doc will synthesize multi-species movement data to explore spatial patterns across trophic groups during periods of environmental change. The data will be used to answer scientific questions and hypotheses in the area of bio-physical coupled systems, movement ecology, impact of climate change on tropical ecosystems, ecosystem stability, etc. Along with utilizing the existing data sets, the project will include field experimentation, animal tagging and tracking and/or simulation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR). Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Marine Science, Ecology, Bio-Oceanography, Fisheries or a related discipline from an accredited institution; Strong analytical and computing skills with a background in quantitative and spatial statistics, spatial ecology, and experience with acoustic telemetry research; Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication; Data acquisition, QA/QC procedures and processing skills and management of large databases preferred; Knowledge of geographical information systems (ARC-GIS), modeling and/or numerical techniques; Must have a high degree of motivation, and the ability to serve a diverse educational and cultural public constituency. Experience with small boat handling and certified SCUBA diver would be beneficial. |
Required Qualifications |
The candidate will work as part of the research team at UVI’s Center for Marine and Environmental Studies and will contribute to the continued development of the acoustic telemetry research program at UVI’s Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES), publish papers, and give presentations, with VI-EPSCoR Brewer’s Bay Ecosystem Analysis Project as the focus of research. Duties and responsibilities, in addition to those outlined above, also include helping with development of the Caribbean acoustic tracking network, outreach, mentoring students and technicians, and participating in on-going field research. There is also potential for gaining teaching experience at the University of the Virgin Islands. |
