Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, United States

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Physics & Astronomy, University of Tennessee - Knoxville. The successful applicant will carry out interdisciplinary research that touches a wide range of topics in quantum materials such as correlated electron systems, unconventional superconductivity, topological states, quantum magnetism, and spintronics. The focus of this research is on atomically engineered complex oxide heterostructures. Research work will be performed at the Joint Institute of Advanced Materials, which houses a comprehensive suite of tools for materials synthesis, macroscopic characterizations, and microscopic analysis.

Qualifications

The applicant should have a PhD in physics or in a closely related field with expertise in one or more of the topics mentioned above. Applicant’s previous experience in one or more of the following techniques is desired: laser molecular beam epitaxy, resonant x-ray scattering, electronic and thermal transport, microfabrication, and photoemission spectroscopy. Experience in programing softwares, such as Labview and MATLAB, is a plus. Considering the interdisciplinary nature of the research, the applicant should be highly self-motivated with strong interests in emergent phenomena and collective excitations in quantum materials.

UT’s Department of Physics & Astronomy has an exemplary research record, with seven professors earning NSF CAREER awards in the past eight years, eight professors recently cited among the world’s top two percent of physicists (based on citations), and Professor Geoff Greene honored with the prestigious Bonner Prize in 2020. The University of Tennessee is a thriving research community located near Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with whom UT shares five joint institutes. Situated in the Tennessee Valley, the University is on the doorstep of the Smoky Mountains National Park.
