What You Will Do

The Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking two motivated, enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Associates to work on a multi-scale genomics project that encompasses epigenetics, virology, genomics, bioinformatics, and advanced visualization. The objective of this project is to re-envision what it means to ‘sequence a genome’. As a part of this effort, we are advancing the science and technology of genome mapping by developing new 4-dimensional genomics capabilities. Our goal is to deploy these capabilities to discover fundamental cellular functions that are hijacked by viruses to cause disease. The postdoc candidates will work closely with a large team of scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and students as part of this multi-disciplinary research project.

Experimental Epigenetics Position:

We are seeking an independent candidate interested in studying epigenetic regulatory mechanisms that control pathogenicity of viral infections in human cells. Using epigenetics assays (including ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq), you will determine how viruses impact the epigenome and contribute to altering the 3D structure of the human genome. This position is ideal for a scientist with a strong background in virology or immunology, who wants to expand her/his expertise into epigenetics and genomics. Candidates with expertise in experimental or computational epigenetics are highly encouraged to apply.

Bioinformatics Position:

In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing a variety of NGS datasets that support the modeling and visualization of 3-dimensional genome architecture including but not limited to data generated from HiC, single cell HiC, ChIPseq, and ATAC-seq assays.

These positions will be filled in either Bioenergy and Biome Sciences or Biosecurity & Public Health group, depending on the skills of the selected candidates.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Experimental Epigenetics Position:

  • Background/education in related biological discipline (Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology,Cell & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology)

  • Expertise in molecular biology techniques (including protocol development and execution)

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture

  • Experience with pathogen exposure or detection (viruses or bacteria)

  • Excellent communication and writing skills

Bioinformatics Position:

  • Background/education in a related biological discipline (i.e. Microbiology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Computational Biology)

  • Fluency in one or more coding languages (Python preferred)

  • Experience working within a high performance computing environment

  • Demonstrated experience analyzing and building workflows for NGS and/or epigenetics data

  • Familiarity with library preparation and quality control for targeted next-generation sequencing

Education : Ph.D in Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immuniology, Biotechnology, or Computational Biology completed within 5 years or will have completed all Ph.D requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

Experimental Epigenetics Position:

  • Familiarity with epigenetics data sets, including computational analysis and pipeline development

  • Experience with ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, MeDIP-seq, or WGBS

  • Working knowledge of one or more programming languages (e.g. C++, Python, Perl, Java)

  • Experience with NGS and Illumina, PacBio, or Oxford Nanopore sequencing data

  • A strong publication record

Bioinformatics Position:

  • Experience with data and algorithms that support molecular dynamic simulations of DNA/RNA

  • Experience with software and analysis pipelines that enable 2D and 3D visualization of the human genome
