This position will work on research under the supervision of Faculty Mentors – Dr. Markus Petters and Dr. Nicholas Meskhidze.

The research will focus on collection of size-resolved aerosol flux measurements to be made during field studies and analyzation of the data after the campaign. The successful candidate is expected to have a background in aerosol research and strong experimental skills.

  • Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare instrumentation for campaign, including calibration and pre-campaign tests.
  • Setup instrumentation in the field and ensure continuous operation.
  • Service equipment as needed.
  • Independently perform measurements in the field for extended periods of time.
  • Curate and quality control data during the campaign.
  • Analyze the data subsequent to the campaign.
  • Present scientific findings in written reports
  • and publications and through oral presentations at conferences.

  • Collaborate with graduate students on project related objectives.

 

Other Work/Responsibilities
  • The field study will be in Houston TX. The Post Doc will be located in Houston for 4 months to attend to the instrumentation and in Raleigh for the remainder of the appointment. While performing field work in Houston, the Post Doc will be required to work outdoors and weather conditions may be hot and humid. Housing will be provided and paid for while the Post Doc is in Houston.

 

Minimum Experience/Education

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.

 

Departmental Required Skills

A PhD in Atmospheric Science, Aerosol Science and Engineering or related fields.

 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Demonstrated commitment to publication of results and strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
  • Previous experience with field measurements and demonstrated skills in complex data analysis is highly advantageous.
  • Experience with any of the following measurement platforms is also desirable: differential mobility analyzer, hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer, optical particle counters, single particle soot photometer, eddy-covariance flux measurements, and/or Lidar.
  • Preferred programming experience with Julia, MATLAB, and/or IGOR

 

Required License or Certification

A North Carolina driver’s license is required since the candidate will need to access remote field sites on a routine basis and on short notice. Public transportation or ridesharing options are not feasible for these tasks.
As well the candidate is expected to transport research equipment from Raleigh to Houston and likely from Colorado to Raleigh.
