The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will work on our new GRIP4PSI-funded project, addressing how foliar fungal endophytes rescue plants from stress. Responsibilities include: (1) greenhouse experiments for endophyte stress tests with pathogens and drought including microcosm development, (2) maintenance of fungal cultures needed for greenhouse experiments, (3) dual RNAseq processing of plant-fungal tissue samples, (4) bioinformatic and statistical analysis of data, and (5) manuscript writing and presentations based on results. The postdoc will meet frequently with Dr. Christine Hawkes to discuss best practices in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and mentoring.

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology conducts fundamental and translational research on contemporary problems in plant and microbial sciences. As part of the department, the Hawkes lab addresses the ecology of plant-microbe-soil interactions using molecules-to-ecosystems approaches.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will be expected to participate in general lab maintenance duties related to the project, including ordering supplies, cleaning and sterilizing equipment, organizing waste disposal, recording activities in paper and electronic notebooks, and training new lab members.

May occasionally need to drive to obtain supplies or ship samples to collaborators.

Minimum Experience/Education

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.

Departmental Required Skills
  • PhD in microbial ecology, microbiology, plant biology, plant pathology, or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years experience with plant-fungal interactions, transcriptomics, and R analysis of sequence data.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication.
  • Strong technical skills in plant and microbial sciences.
  • Excellent record keeping, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and integrity.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a team that includes diverse people from different cultures.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Evidence of prior research success and publication of results in plant-microbe interactions.
  • Minimum 3 years experience generating and analyzing sequence data.
  • Previous work in plant-fungal systems.
  • Experience with corn, wheat, or soy.
  • Start date between Oct 1, 2020 and Jan 1, 2021.

Required License or Certification
  • Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one.
