The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research in the area of electrical machines and drives. This includes evaluating and designing novel electrical machine topologies, power converters and control algorithms. The initial focus will be on electrical machines design using advanced materials. The research efforts will cover a broad range of applications including renewable energy, electrical/hybrid traction/propulsion applications (including land vehicles, aerospace and ship propulsion), oil & gas and mining applications. The postdoctoral fellow will also help establish the Werner Lab. The lab will focus on various aspects of energy sustainability. This will include specifying and implementing a plan for hardware installation. This will be done through collaboration with Marquette building facility managers, graduate students and external vendors. The postdoctoral fellow will be advised by Prof. Ayman EL-Refaie., the Thomas and Suzanne M. Werner Endowed Chair for Renewable and Secure Energy within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Marquette University.
Duties and Responsibilities
(1) Perform engineering and science research regarding electrical machines and drives, (2) Develop and write grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations, (3) Support establishment of sustainable energy laboratory, (4) Write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, (5) Write abstracts and presentations for highly competitive conference venues, and (6) Mentor graduate students. Successful candidate will be expected to work independently on research including lab work, collaborate with a diverse group of researchers and effectively communicate in written and oral presentations. It is expected that the candidate has experience with electrical machines design including experience with Finite Element Analysis (proficiency with one or more commercial packages is expected). It is also expected that the candidate will have familiarity with electrical drives and the interactions between power converters and electrical machines.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have a PhD in electrical engineering, or related discipline.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Prior experience with electrical machine design (including design, analysis, build and test). In addition to electromagnetic design aspects, experience with thermal and mechanical aspects of the design is preferred. Broad knowledge and experience of various commercial software packages related to electrical machine design and power converters simulation is preferred.
