We invite applications to an open position for a full-time postdoctoral researcher at the Extreme Light Laboratory (ELL) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). The laboratory is located on UNL City Campus and houses high-intensity femtosecond-duration laser systems capable of producing up to petawatt-peak power. The lasers are distinguished by exceptional laser beam quality, stability, and parameter control, enabling a wide range of laser-science research with applications in physics, medicine, security, and defense. ELL is one of the ten host institutions of LaserNetUS, a national network of high-power lasers in North America.

- Ph.D. in physics, optical sciences, electrical engineering, or a closely related field
- Excellent verbal, presentation, and scientific/technical writing skills
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in one or more of the following areas: high-intensity high-power ultrashort-pulse lasers and optics, applications of lasers to accelerators, and laser-matter interactions, laser-wakefield acceleration, plasma physics, ultrafast science, or x-ray technology.
In this position, you will take a leadership role in the design, development, and operation of lasers and laser-science experiments. Additional duties will include program planning, experimental modeling, design, implementation, data collection, data analysis. Other responsibilities include developing high-level interpersonal skills, creating new partnerships, collaborating with others, work in multidisciplinary teams, and facility users in different research areas and academic units to perform cutting-edge experiments. Train and supervise graduate students, develop protocols, and prepare reports, review the scientific literature to develop research plans, interpret results, and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals. More about The Extreme Light Laboratory
We are pioneers in the science, technology, and applications of high-intensity laser light. Our team includes research scientists, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduates, and technicians. We are experts in petawatt-power and femtosecond-duration lasers, the science of highly relativistic laser-matter interactions, compact laser-driven accelerators, laser-driven x-ray light sources, and their applications for security, defense, and industry. Research at ELL has been featured in various high-profile journals, including Physical Review Letters and Nature Photonics. As a host institution of the national laser network LaserNetUS, we have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists from other institutions worldwide.
Our 8,000-sq.-ft. research facility occupies three floors of the Behlen Lab building on the UNL city campus. The laboratories meet stringent requirements on temperature (±1 C), humidity (< 5%), and vibration control, made possible by separate designated electrical, processed-chilled-water, and air-handling systems. The facility was built and has been directed over the past 15 years by Prof. Donald Umstadter. For more information, see https://www.unl.edu/diocles/home
