The West Virginia University Research Corporation is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy. The successful candidate will work on the synthesis and characterization of enzyme-responsive paramagnetic probes to image enzyme activity in vivo using EPR-based technologies (Angew Chem Int Ed, doi: 10.1002/anie.201806851). The work involves collaborations with principal investigators of the WVU In vivo Multifunctional Magnetic Resonance (IMMR) center, Drs. Valery Khramtsov and Tim Eubank, and requires the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment. Candidates with a strong background in organic chemistry and analytical chemistry are encouraged to apply. Experience in electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy would be desirable but is not required. The research is funded by the National Institute of Health. The Postdoctoral Fellow will present his/her research at both international and local conferences and submit in peer-reviewed journals.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
  • Synthesize EPR/NMR bio-probes by assisting in the design of a retrosynthetic scheme.
  • Characterize new compounds using organic chemistry standards (NMR, EPR, UV, IR, MS, etc.)
  • Evaluate the probe in vitro.
  • Investigate and evaluate current literature.
  • Co-mentor students on techniques and other lab activities, and data analysis.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. Degree in Organic Chemistry or foreign equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in synthetic organic chemistry is required.
  • Three (3) years of experience involving:
    • Reading scientific literature.
    • Working in a multidisciplinary environment.
    • Communicating results through oral presentations, posters, and peer-reviewed articles.
  • Ability to perform retro-synthetic analysis.
  • Ability to use HPLC equipment.
  • Organic chemistry skills (multi-step air-free reactions, working safely with sensitive, toxic, flammable molecules, etc.)
  • Ability to perform full characterization of organic molecules using appropriate methods such as EPR, NMR, IR, UV, melting point, HPLC, GC or electrochemistry.
  • Good organizational and communication skills (orally and written).
  • Ability to teach and train new lab members.
  • Ability to learn new methods and acquire new skills.
  • Ability to perform basic computer work and chemistry-related software.
  • Able to contribute in writing and submitting new articles, abstracts, research reports and grant proposals.
  • Strong ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to keep a record of manipulations in lab books.
