Engineered Systems (ES) is a part of RTI’s Technology Advancement and Commercialization Group, which focuses on applied materials chemistry and device engineering. Researchers within ES focus their time on several technology areas, including, catalysis, separations, polymers, encapsulation, drug delivery, membranes, sensors, and micro-analytics.

Using state of the art instruments in their Research Triangle Park laboratories, ES researchers propose and lead projects with both federal and commercial clients.

The ES team is seeking to add a Postdoctoral Chemist to the team. If you are adaptable to a broad variety of synthetic techniques, characterizations, separations, purifications, and comfortable collaborating with researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds, focusing on patents, scientific publications, and proposal writing, we would like to hear from you.

You will work in the areas of solvent and sorbent development for gas separations and storage or catalyst development for advanced fuel technologies. You must have a strong background in Organic, Inorganic or Materials Chemistry.

Under the direction of a team of Ph.D. Chemists and Chemical Engineers, you have the unique opportunity to conduct applied research to develop hybrid -organic-inorganic materials, polymers, and small organic molecules for gas separations or catalysts for synthetic fuels, green chemicals, bio-crude upgrading, or other syngas products.

Responsibilities:

  • Synthesize materials according to literature procedures or in-house protocols.
  • Separate and purify target organic compounds from crude mixtures.
  • Find and follow synthetic procedures from the open literature.
  • Develop synthetic routes to new materials with application to the energy industries.
  • Quickly become independent at finding procedures and building resources to perform synthesis in new areas with application to energy and fuels.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Organic chemistry or closely related discipline.
  • History of multistep organic synthesis and/or synthetic methodology
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of reaction mechanisms and reactivity
  • Experienced in analytical techniques/characterization and data analysis
  • Demonstrated high-impact problem-solving and success in developing and advancing novel molecules as evidenced by publications
  • Effective presentation, communication, organizational, and planning skills with attention to detail
  • Able to manage collaborations and build strong relationships with peers and external partners
