Job Summary

South Mountain Community College is hiring an English Faculty (2 positions).

This is a short-term position with a projected end date of May 14, 2021.

This position supervises and teaches a diverse population of students in various instructional delivery methods including utilizing a virtual platform to provide in-person instruction in an online environment in college-level English Composition and in developmental English courses. Evaluates and monitors students' academic achievement and records. Provides effective instruction and student assessment using traditional and non-traditional methods, utilizes technology in the classroom, and develops progressive curriculum. Participates in college committees/councils and in Language Arts Division meetings. Participates in college convocation and commencement activities.

This is a short-term position with a projected end date of May 14, 2021.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises and teaches a diverse population of students in a classroom setting; develops written course syllabi/outlines and course materials; evaluates student competency in composition and developmental English courses and monitors students' scholastic records; prepares and grades exams and essay assignments

  • Maintains office hours to assist and advise students

  • Works with colleagues to select and participate in staff development activities relevant to developmental English and composition courses; works with colleagues in program assessment activities

  • Develops and enhances knowledge of learning theory through attendance at conferences and through District workshops/training.

  • Engages in the academic life of the college; responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, committee assignments, professional development, workshops/presentations and commencement activities

Minimum Qualifications

The Academic Teaching Fields require the following from an accredited college or university:

  1. A master's degree in the teaching field, or a master's in any teaching field with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field

  2. EDU 250 - Teaching and Learning in the Community College -- or equivalent must be completed within two years of date of hire

Desired Qualifications

  1. PhD or Master's Degree in English or Rhetoric and Composition

  2. Recent experience teaching English composition and developmental English in a community college setting

  3. Experience working with diverse populations

  4. Experience integrating critical thinking skills and global / cultural perspectives into the teaching of composition / developmental courses

  5. Experience teaching based on current learning research and best practices

  6. Experience with various methods and means of instructional delivery
