Overview:

The Senior Research Scientist will lead scientific and technical support to management of research projects and oversee multiple concurrent solicitations, proposal review processes, contract awards and funding execution at the program level. This position will provide domain expertise and assist in coordinating the efforts of a multi-disciplinary team of government and contract researchers, clinicians, academic experts and consumers to bring all the various projects in their domain together into a cohesive effort.
Hematopoietic stem cell culture and differentiation experience required. Tissue engineering experience a plus!

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews research documentation and provides detailed technical written notes

  • Performs recurring analyses on research portfolios to identify critical gaps, exceptional results and/or lack of progress

  • Interacts with other services and government agencies, organizes and hosts research planning and coordination meetings, and informs the Principal Investigator of developments

  • Manages various portfolios and technology roadmaps, within the context of the overall strategy

  • Maintains open communication with the Principal Investigator, advises of processes, reports progress and serves as a point of contact, as applicable

  • Provides guidance to scientists preparing research proposals, to include guidance on research protocol development, as needed

  • Authors or co-authors topics to help move through the technology roadmap for domain

  • Drafts program announcements, requests for information, proposals and vehicles to solicit offertory

  • Performs scientific reviews on research proposals submitted for consideration, as requested

  • Leads Proposal Review Board meetings and makes funding recommendations that are consistent with the scientific direction and technology roadmap for domain

  • Directs multifunctional teams and provides clinical and scientific domain expertise as needed

  • Maintains and updates files of all applicable regulatory documentation for IACUC or IRB (including protocols, approvals, amendments, modifications, etc.) as well as any communications with the sponsor or any other Federal or regulatory office (including prior approvals, change in scope, etc.)

Qualifications:

  • PhD or MD required

  • Biomedical, Bioengineering, Immunology, Biochemistry or similar degree

  • Experience with hematopoietic stem cell and iPSC culture and differentiation

  • Experience with flow cytometry

  • Knowledge of cell culture scale up and bioreactors

  • Expertise in aseptic techniques and the handling and maintenance of cell lines

  • Experience with cell culture and cell line propagation as well as experience working in a BSL-2 laboratory

  • Experience with media evaluation, development and optimization

  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques

  • Proven record of strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Ability to multi-task

  • Ability to design and analyze multi-factorial biometric experiments

  • 5-10 years knowledge and experience with Department of Defense (DoD) Grants and Agreements administration and management, preferred

  • 5-10 years Medical research project management experience strongly desired, preferably with Department of Defense

  • Experience with advanced medical technologies, preferred

  • Knowledge of military system, preferred

  • Demonstrate competence in oral and written communication

  • Must be organized, attentive to detail, and posses a positive, friendly and professional demeanor

  • Ability to be flexible with changing priorities and available to interact with employees, clients and sponsors of all levels

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in fast-paced, high-pressured environment with strict deadlines and to manage multiple projects

  • Ability to develop strong trusting relationships in order to gain support and achieve results

  • Computer skills including at least intermediate level experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
