Zayed University (ZU) seeks a Provost/Chief Academic Officer to lead its new strategic direction, transforming itself from a teaching institution into a comprehensive research-and-teaching university, focusing on integrating research and instruction. Founded in 1998, the ZU is the newest of UAE’s three government-sponsored higher education institutions. Based in modern campuses in UAE’s two largest cities, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the university offers graduate and undergraduate degrees through its Colleges of Arts & Creative Enterprises, Business, Communications & Media Sciences, Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Natural & Health Sciences, and Technical Innovation.
ZU is accredited by the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation and the US-based Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Academic programs in various Colleges are accredited by AACSB, ABET, ACEJMC, and NCATE. The faculty of 66 nationalities offers courses in English to 10,000 bilingual students, of which who are mainly Emirati (90% of whom are female). ZU has cooperative relationships with universities in Australia, Italy, Japan, Scotland, and Spain. The university is ranked #20 in QS World University Arab Rankings and 651-700 in QS World Rankings. The Provost reports to the Vice President (who is the CEO / Vice Chancellor of ZU) and works closely with the Chief Administrative and Finance Officer, an Assistant Provost, two Associate Provosts and the Deans of the academic Colleges. The Provost is responsible for the university’s strategic development, academic leadership, curriculum, personnel management of faculty and staff, budget planning, and fiscal management. The Provost will play a central role in the University’s efforts to improve the student experience, increase graduate employability, enhance the university’s research effort, and build its national and international standing.
The Provost is expected to hold an earned doctorate from a leading accredited higher education institution and a current rank of full professor. S/he is also expected to have a record of high-quality scholarship and effective service, experience in university academic administration, cultural adaptability, and fluency in English. International experience, familiarity with the Gulf region, and some knowledge of Arabic are desirable but not essential.
There is a competitive compensation package for the Provost, which includes housing, education allowance for dependents, annual return airfares, health insurance and a vehicle allowance. There are no local income taxes, and a citizen of a country that taxes worldwide income, such as the US, may qualify for favorable tax treatment. The position is available from September 2020.
