  • Position Summary

    This is a one year post-doctoral fellowship position that will provide the training needed for completed of a doctorate in psychology. This position will be supervised by a psychologist with a Phd or Psyd. Counseling and clinical therapy of outpatients in the Cancer Resource Center and other outpatient areas. Other responsibilities include integrated care of inpatients including consultation, participation in nursing research, education of nurses and ancillary staff on communication strategies for patients experiencing different challenges on the inpatient unit. The mental health professional understands the unique ongoing psychosocial impact of illness on patients and families emotional and financial stability, relationships and changes in lifestyle that accompany cancer and other serious illnesses. Provides individual/group therapy, education, support services to patients and families. Provides psychosocial assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, referrals and information to patients and families. As a team member within the Cancer Resource Center, works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to effect optimal patient and family outcomes. Serves as a resource for the Oncology Programs within the William R. Bliss Cancer Center as well as patients with other serious illnesses throughout the medical center. Ensures all actions taken support patient centered care.

    • Works with program supervisor to establish areas and methods of patient care

    • Maintains and improves the healthcare practice environment conducive to the provision of quality health care.

    • Attains and maintains knowledge and competence that reflects current professional therapy practice.

    • Continually reassesses competencies and identifies needs for additional knowledge, skills, personal growth, and integrative learning experiences.

    • Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.

    • Practices in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

    Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

    • Phd or Psy.D

    • Completion of one year internship at an American Psychological Association approved site


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Licensed or licensed eligible (provisional or full license) in psychology by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Board of Psychology Examiners.


    Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

    • Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.

    • Active listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

    • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

    • Ability to manage one's time effectively.

    • Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.

    • Knowledge of psychological assessment methods.

    • Knowledge and skill in psychotherapy/counseling models, theories and techniques.
