California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) invites applications for the position of Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Education. The person selected for this position will serve as the School's chief academic and administrative officer and will report directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The School of Social Sciences and Education is going through a time of unprecedented growth, and now stands at approximately 4,300 full-time equivalent students. The School is composed of several departments and programs:

Accreditations in the School include AAQEP (Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation), CTC (California Commission on Teacher Credentialing), and CSWE (Council on Social Work Education). The School also offers Criminal Justice; Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies; Sociology; and Education programs at the CSUB Antelope Valley campus. The school's 80 full-time faculty, and 30 staff are supportive and collegial (, as are the SSE alumni.

The Location
CSUB is located in Kern County (population approaching 900,000), spanning the southern San Joaquin Valley and Western Mojave. Bakersfield (metropolitan population approaching 400,000) is a growing community projected to double in population in twenty years. The city is within two hours of Pacific Ocean beaches and Sierra mountain locations and is just an hour and a half north of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate degree in an appropriate field in one of the disciplines represented in the school from an accredited institution of higher learning

  • Evidence of significant scholarly and professional achievement sufficient to merit a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of professor in one of the School's departments

  • Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in one of the disciplines represented in the school

  • Demonstrated success in academic administration and leadership at the school (Department Chair or above) and/or university level

  • Record of commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity with students, staff, and faculty

  • An ability to adapt to changing circumstances and technologies

  • Demonstrated success in securing private funding and building important relationships with constituencies (PK-12, community, donors, and alumni).

  • Experience with fiscal management procedures and personnel management

  • Evidence of successful grant writing and funding

  • Knowledge of assessment and its use in data driven decision making

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commitment to fostering effective advising, student success, and graduation initiatives

  • A record of effectiveness in developing and implementing strategic plans

  • Evidence of advocating equitably across disparate departments or programs

  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality both within the applicant's school and across the applicant's campus

  • Commitment to shared governance and evidence of building successful university and community partnerships/relationships

  • An ability to work effectively with university executive teams

  • Experience in building or supporting satellite campus programs

  • Experience with AAQEP, CTC or CSWE accreditations
