The Urban Lab in the Department of Entomology at Penn State is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar, anticipated beginning March 15, 2020 or as negotiated. The successful candidate will conduct research involving the feeding biology, development, and endosymbiont transmission in Spotted Lanternfly (SLF, Lycorma delicatula). Spotted lanternfly is an invasive species from Asia that threatens grapes and other commodities and ornamental trees species in Southeastern PA, VA, NJ, DE, and NY. This position will work on projects concerning visualizing how the obligate bacterial endosymbionts of SLF develop and are transmitted, how SLF penetrates plant tissues to feed, and how these change across SLF development. Dr. Urban is collaborating with Dr. Sampurna Sattar to use electropenetrograph (EPG) technology to study SLF feeding. The successful candidate will have experience in advanced microscopy, specifically fluorescence microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, tissue preparation and sectioning. Experience with advanced EPG methods is strongly preferred. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field and be able to provide evidence that all requirements have been met for the completion of the Ph.D. prior to the effective date. This is a fixed term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with the possibility of re-funding.
