Dakota State University seeks a visionary leader with proven administrative, strategic, and collaborative skills to serve as the next dean of the Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. This person will have the opportunity to lead a nationally recognized and pioneering computer and cyber science program that emerged early in the technology era as the home of innovation, invention, entrepreneurship, and world-class scholarship and education. The Dean is responsible for communicating the vision and goals of the College to student, community and professional constituencies and for seeking public and private funds to support the College. The University seeks a talented educator-administrator to lead in a technology-based STEM environment.

The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences received its current name in August of 2017 coinciding with The DSU RISING! gift. This gift created a $40 million engine to bolster DSU’s Cybersecurity education and research programs. In recognition of this gift, the Board of Regents approved renaming the Dakota State University College of Computing to the Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. The college currently enrolls over 3,200 students taking classes in four certificate programs, two associate degrees, four baccalaureate majors (Computer Science, Computer Game Design, Cyber Operations, and Network & Security Administration), two master’s degrees (Computer Science and Cyber Defense), and three PhD programs (Computer Science, Cyber Security and Cyber Defense). These programs are delivered on-campus and through a robust program of online education.

The educational and service mission of the Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences, and consequently the main task for the Dean of the College, consists of several intended outcomes: We seek to build and maintain a quality faculty, to provide an innovative undergraduate curriculum, to earn and maintain peer and accreditation recognition, to create and maintain meaningful partnerships with agencies and corporations, to experience success in extramural funding, to support integrated and interdisciplinary research and development, and to provide an array of relevant graduate programs.

In support of the educational mission of the Beacom College and the university, the Dean will focus on the quality of the students as integral to the success of the college. As demand and enrollment have grown, the Dean will need to ensure that the Beacom College has the resources necessary to advance its educational mission and that the college culture continues to focus on student success. The dean will support excellence and forward thinking in curriculum development and instructional excellence. In addition, the Dean will continue and expand the School’s efforts to build diversity—in all its forms—by launching creative programs to recruit diverse faculty, students, and staff; by focusing on retention efforts for women and underrepresented minorities; and by fostering a culture in which all faculty, students, and staff are welcomed, valued, and supported.

Reporting to the Provost, the dean serves as the chief ambassador and representative for the Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences, championing the work of its faculty, supporting the education of its exceptional students, connecting to industry and governmental agencies, and raising funds to fuel its continued eminence and expansion. The dean is a member of the senior leadership team of the University, contributing to institutional strategy and fostering collaboration in and among units in the College and across campus.

With a focus on comprehensive leadership, the Dean will represent the Beacom College externally, lead fundraising efforts, and ensure that DSU is recognized for its leadership role in computer and cyber sciences. The Dean will elevate the visibility of the College, work to engage key federal funding agencies, and work to connect faculty with industry and governmental partners locally, nationally, and internationally. The Dean will be the School’s lead fundraiser and will have the opportunity to attract transformative resources that will empower the Beacom College’s future intellectual leadership. The Dean will steward relationships with principal donors while continuing to find investments for infrastructure to advance the communication and alumni relations functions that are critical to bringing in new resources.

Dakota State University and the Beacom College have a special focus on the development, application, implications, and impacts of computing, information technologies and cyber security in all areas of human endeavor. DSU has received multiple Center of Excellence designations in education, research and regional resource development from the U.S. National Security Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. DSU is also home to the Madison Cyber Labs (MadLabs), a cyber Research & Development hub with labs and institutes that explore and advance technology application, workforce development, business expansion, economic growth, and policy improvement across multiple disciplines and fields. The successful candidate will be expected to play a critical role in maintaining and advancing these relationships as well as involvement in expanding funding opportunities in computer science, cyber security, cyber defense, research and development, workforce development, and economic development.

Qualifications, Qualities, and Experiences: Candidates must be committed to academic excellence and student success and have a distinguished record of leadership to provide visionary direction for the college within the parameters of the university’s mission and strategic plan. Qualified candidates must have a minimum of ten years of experience in higher education or in leading technology-based organizations. Experience with business/industry or a government agency directly related to one of the majors in the College is preferred. An earned doctorate from an accredited university in a field related to the College’s mission is preferred. Also preferred are credentials showing a record of teaching, research and service commensurate with an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.

Other requirements include: strong skills in management of financial and human resources as well as the ability to make strategic budgetary and operational decisions that maximize resources. The successful candidate will work with the Vice President for Advancement to cultivate and solicit gifts and in collaboration with faculty, establish and enhance partnerships with U.S. industry and government as well as establish and engage advisory boards for the majors in the College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Other preferred qualities include: Ability to mentor faculty, staff, and students; Evidence of successful strategic planning and implementation; Demonstrated success in program development and evaluation and personnel and budget management; Financial management skills with the ability to make strategic budgetary decisions that maximize resources; Ability to build consensus and collegiality; Evidence of successful fund raising and/or securing of grants; A warm and engaging sense of humor.
