Position: Research Scientist

Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Summary: Will provide support to the EROS in the areas of Vegetation and Land Use Dynamics modeling and research related to monitoring, characterizing, and quantifying land use, cover, and vegetation condition. Vegetation and land use dynamics studies at the USGS EROS is a multifaceted initiative related to interrelations among climate, land cover, land use, vegetation condition, and water resources. This research scientist will focus on improving methods for identifying and quantifying different drivers and controls on vegetation condition and water resources across time and space.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop remote sensing based geospatial products related to land use, land condition, and vegetation vigor and state

  • Assess irrigated agriculture through space and time at the field scale

  • Quantify variability of vegetation characteristics due to climate change

  • Identify critical climate and land use drivers and controls on changes in natural vegetation and agricultural management

  • Utilize multiple satellite data (e.g. Landsat, MODIS, AVHRR, VIIRS, and Sentinel-2) for continuous monitoring and mapping of vegetation dynamics and irrigation practices

  • Investigate effects of drought and water availability on vegetation conditions and crop yield

  • Prepare periodic progress reports, publish peer-reviewed journal articles, and provide oral presentations at professional conferences and meetings

 

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with monitoring, inventory, mapping, and analysis of geospatial dataset related to land use/cover

  • Professional knowledge and understanding of crop phenology, irrigation practices, drought, and climate change with respect to monitoring/forecasting vegetation dynamics

  • Experience and understanding of various vegetation indices for assessing changes in vegetation and identifying ecological/hydrological variables

  • Experience with statistical methods and geospatial analysis techniques

  • Strong background in advanced computing, automation processes, and programming using Python, GDAL, R, SPlus etc.

  • Excellent written English and oral communication skills and peer-reviewed publication records

  • Evidence of being able to work collaboratively and independently

Education/Experience:

  • A Masters or PhD in Geography, Climatology, Ecology, Engineering, Forestry, Hydrology, or a closely related discipline.

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in research and application of remote sensing methods for vegetation modeling, hydrologic analysis, and land use characterization.

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in use of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of remotely sensed images preferably Landsat, MODIS, AVHRR, VIIRS, and Sentinel-2
