Qualified candidates are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Dr. Mark Anastasio’s Lab in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois. The successful candidate will develop, maintain, and operate novel x-ray imaging systems specifically customized for the purpose of in vivo small-animal imaging in support of multiple NIH-funded projects. The candidate must have a clear understanding of the current literature regarding live-animal, x-ray imaging and state-of-the-art respiratory gating techniques.  The simultaneous goals of this position are to safely operate the imaging system in a variety of configurations supporting multiple pre-clinical imaging scenarios and to extend the capabilities of our current compact-source x-ray imaging system. Specific improvements are to include: 1) the capacity to remotely and electronically make precise, repeatable adjustments to the stages during imaging, 2) the integration of respiratory gating into the system, 3) the reduction of data acquisition time via careful choice of devices and 4) the further integration of remote systems for the monitoring and maintenance of animal health during imaging.

The University of Illinois is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer. Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit .

Required qualifications include:

  • A Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, physics or closely related field (ABD applicants may apply and confirmation of your completed degree requirements must be provided on or before the start date).  Per University policy, eligible candidates must have obtained their Ph.D. degree within 10 years of the start date of the position.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with the use and remote control of high-end, integrated electronics and the ability to write custom device drivers in Python.
  • Familiarity with both radiation safety and live-animal imaging protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of projection image formation, computed tomography and a strong background in the physics relevant to such tasks.
  • The ideal candidate will have some experience in the computer simulation of x-ray experiments.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and exceptional communication skills are crucial as this position requires the performing, documenting and reporting of a wide-range of imaging experiments for a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is a full-time, benefits-eligible position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.  Some training at the current x-ray facility in St. Louis, MO is required at the beginning of the appointment and related travels costs will be reimbursed in accordance with University of Illinois policy for Travel Reimbursement and Pier Diem.

This position is available immediately but the start date is negotiable. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

To apply for this position, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and names/contact information for three references to Dr. Frank Brooks at fjb@illinois.edu.  Please include “Postdoctoral Research Associate” in the subject line of the email.  Full consideration will be given to complete applications received until the position is filled.
