Two new positions (one post-doctoral fellow and one research technician) on the immune modulation of brain function and behavior will be available at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. Please note that the laboratory is currently located at the Johns Hopkins University and will move to UAB in January, 2019.

The laboratory (PI: Shinichi Kano) ( investigates brain immunology and homeostasis in health and disease by using multidisciplinary approaches of neurobiology and immunology, with a focus on intercellular signal transduction. Current projects include but are not limited to: 1) Molecular communications between astrocytes and microglia during neuroinflammation, 2) Role of peripheral immune system and circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) on brain development, function, and behaviors, and 3) Regulation of postnatal brain development by glia-glia interaction. The ultimate goal of the laboratory’s research is to discover new biological concepts that can be harnessed to develop therapeutic strategies against psychiatry and neurological disorders.

1) Post-doctoral fellow

The post-doctoral fellow will be encouraged to develop her/his own research within the overall goal of the laboratory: immune-brain interaction in health and disease. We particularly seek a fellow with prior experiences in electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging. The fellow will also have an opportunity to take part in the highly interactive scientific community at the UAB.


  1. Recent PhD or MD/PhD in neurobiology or a related field.

  2. Practical in vivo skills in working with mice, including intravenous injection, stereotactic surgery, and behavioral assessments are preferred.

  3. Experiences with calcium imaging or electrophysiology are preferred.

  4. Excellent interpersonal skills. The fellow is expected to collaborate with colleagues inside and outside the laboratory.
